The latest Grand Designs magazine includes kitchen pendant lights built from fixtures and fittings in the Factorylux modular range, including the classic Coolicon shades.
McClaren Excell, an architectural and interior design practice based in London's Marylebone, were commissioned for the conversion of Peak Corner Barn and specified the kitchen lighting.
Park Corner Barn is constructed of traditional brick and flint. It dates from the 1700s, though with Victorian additions. It was first converted in 1997 into what the architects describe as a 'suffocating maze of plasterboard corridors and landings.' The interior of the former barn was stripped back and re-modelled to create a large-open plan living area including a kitchen. The design is one of simplicity: McClaren Excell used a 'limited palette of sober materials to ensure a sense of consistency and calm throughout the building.' The choice of lighting reflects the palette of materials. The main pendant light over the kitchen table is a reclaimed piece - probably a ship's pendant light from the early 20th century. Factorylux grey enamel Coolicon shades are used to light the kitchen work surfaces. When there is work to be done, the scale and shape of the Coolicon shades makes them perfect for task lighting above kitchen work surfaces. And, after the work is done, the openings in the neck of the shade create both ambient and accent lighting. The Coolicons are available shade-only or as complete kitchen pendant lights designed using the Factorylux Made For You configurators. All the Made For You pendants are built, tested and certified to BS EN 60598 at our high-tech production facility in Yorkshire and dispatched for safe and simple installation with all the necessary fixings and fittings.
