Tips & tricks

Finding a Lighting Designer | Factorylux

The UK is a leading centre for lighting design - the design and specification of lighting for projects large and small - and it's an astonishingly diverse and successful community. It includes celebrated individuals such as Bruno Poet, the award winning theatre lighting designer, and renowned global architectural lighting design practices like Speirs and Major. And, while the centre of gravity is undoubtedly in London, there are hugely respected and influential practices around the UK such as Michael Grubb Studio in Bournemouth and Kevan Shaw Lighting Design in Edinburgh. Factorylux lighting specified by theatre lighting designer Bruno Poet Factorylux has worked with and had lighting specified by most of the major lighting designers and practices in the UK and we're sometimes asked to suggest lighting designers for projects. It probably only makes sense to instruct a lighting designer where the cost of the lighting is over £5,000 though, of course, architects will advise on lighting specification as part of an overall project. While we know the value of professional lighting design, it's hard to make a specific recommendation of a designer. Our suggestion is to use the online resources provided by the Association of Lighting Designers (ALD) or the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD). Factorylux lighting specified by architectural lighting designer Speirs + Major There is some overlap in membership, but the ALD is weighted towards event lighting designers - whether theatre or other forms of performance art. And the IALD is weighted towards architectural lighting design - the lighting of the inside or outside of buildings and other structures. With some careful research, you'll find the perfect lighting designer for your project. For small scale projects - a room of your home or business - the products in the Factorylux range include detailed technical information to help you understand how they can be used and there are the Made For You configurators to help design the perfect pendant light.
