The Factorylux range of glass pendant light shades now includes two glass versions of the classic Coolicon - one in transparent clear glass, and one in transparent opal glass.
Our first glass pendant shade was the Bletchley Park Glass Light Shade recreated for the restoration of Bletchley Park, the World War Two home of the UK's codebreaking operations and a birthplace of modern information technology. That shade launched in April 2016 and has proved hugely successful and has been specified for a number of heritage lighting projects.
There were several manufacturing challenges to overcome with the Bletchley Park shades, not least ensuring the glass was evenly thick down the body of the shade and the hole in the neck was perfectly central. Successfully producing hundreds of Bletchley shades gave us the confidence to take on the more sculptured challenge of the Coolicon design. As with the Bletchley Park shade, the Coolicon shades are shaped by hand in the UK for exceptional form and finish.
The shape of the new shades is, save for the openings in the neck of the shade, faithful to the original Coolicon design created in the 1930s by the Benjamin Electric Company. Because the shades are transparent or translucent, unlike the original metal Coolicons, no openings in the neck are required to allow light through the neck. The glass Coolicons do, however, have three air holes in the rim of the neck of the shade to allow heat from the light source to escape.
The new glass pendant lights shades are available 'shade only' for fitting to existing pendants. The hole in the neck of the shade is 39mm in diameter and is compatible with a range of standard screw (E27) lamp holders, including the Factorylux cord-grip, hooked and threaded versions, all available in brass, bronze, silver or nine carat gold plate.
The shades are also available as complete ready-to-install glass pendant lights fitted with your choice of accessories - lamp holder, lighting cable and ceiling rose - use the Made For You glass pendant light configurator. When you're happy with the design, the glass pendant light is built at out production HQ in Yorkshire and tested and certified to BS EN 60598.
