The advertising agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty reinterpreted a scene from the Nutcracker for the Bailey’s Christmas advert. The set for the commercial, Bailey’s Christmas Nutcracker, used dozens of pendant lights made from Factorylux vintage brass lamp holders, gold fabric cable and squirrel cage filament light bulbs.
The production company was Rattling Stick, highly acclaimed and based in London’s Soho. Rattling Stick have won numerous awards including Cannes Grand Prix. Set design was by Sarah Greenwood, known for period dramas such as Sherlock Holmes and Pride & Prejudice. The Bailey’s set was called Candyland, a reference to the Nutcracker’s land of sweets.
The advert is directed and edited by Jack Whitely and beautifully choreographed by Benjamin Millepied (Natalie Portman’s husband). It focusses on a dance between the Nutcracker Prince (the Royal Ballet’s Steven McRae) and Clara (Berlin Staatsballett’s Iana Salenko). The powerful and electrifying affair is destructively interrupted by the Mouse King (Thiago Soares, also from the Royal Ballet). The ensuing battle between the rivals is ended by Clara pirouetting to the rescue of her Prince. The twist in the tale is that instead of falling into the arms of her handsome Prince, Clara rejoins her friends for a night of fun. The design brief for the Candyland set was ‘an amazing after-party’, ‘baroque’, ‘urban’ and ‘like a speakeasy’.
The Factorylux gold lighting cable can be specified for bare bulb pendant lights using the ‘Custom Lighting’ pendant light builder or for simple lights – plug, cable and lamp holder – using the simple light configurator.
