Few rooms are as much fun to decorate as those belonging to children. This is the place to let your (and their) imagination run wild. Experiment with colour, go big on a theme, be playful with design… it doesn’t matter what you do, just that the end result makes them feel cosy, inspired and happy. Don’t be afraid of the dark
A dark wall can look spectacular in a kids room (and counteract the bright, neon shades that most toys and kiddie clobber is emblazoned with). For her son Teddy’s bedroom, London interiors blogger Suzi Saunders plumped for Studio Green, the darkest of all Farrow and Ball’s greens (in low lights can look almost black). Best of all these murkier paints are far more forgiving of mucky fingers and occasional crayon scrawls.
Ask your child what they are most passionate about, what interests them and how they want their room to look. Washington DC designer Caroline Bressler’s took her cues from her space-obsessed son Hans. Create a workstation
Encourage kids to be creative by making them a workstation. Walthamstow-based husband and wife team Karin & David, who run online homeware shop Karin Åkesson, wanted to carve out some space in their son Emil’s room for him to be artistic. They’ve nailed it (on a budget) with Ikea Stuva benches - two with drawers and one without - creating a desk at the right height as well as ample storage space. Favourite toys are on display above simple shelving from Danish brand Flexa with artwork adorning the wall behind.

Go bespoke
Graphic designer Nikki BB took a hands-on approach to the revamp of her son Oscar’s bedroom. Unable to find a blind in the right shape, Nikki knew the simplest solution was to make one herself. “We talked about the things he loves, says and makes him smile – and we included them in the design for his blind.” The handmade birch-ply bed was built with tons of hidden storage “to suit his mainly Lego needs.” And when her son asked for a marquee light in his room but all the ones on offer were too expensive, the family teamed together to make one. “If you can’t buy it – make it. Or if you can buy it, just make it anyway. Way cooler.”
